Durable materials

What sustainable materials are there?

Every day in the Netherlands alone we throw away 19 million plastic cups and food packaging after single use. We should not continue to burden future generations with this. A turnaround is needed from disposable to reusable. This way we prevent plastic soup, deal more carefully with raw materials and leave behind a cleaner world."

Our sustainable water bottles and lunch boxes have one thing in common, they reduce waste, new resources and energy. Some are made from biodegradable or recycled materials. Others help raise awareness of waste.

Sustainability is a broad and is actually anything that is not organic, fair trade or recycled but is sustainable. So it lasts a long time. Make the right choice and check out the carefully curated Retulp assortment. Many bottles, cups and lunch boxes at Retulp are made from sustainable materials. Yet there are differences between those materials that are not always so easy to explain in a product text. For example, what exactly is so sustainable about cane sugar, bamboo, cork, or RPET? Here is an explanation of these commonly used materials.

Bamboo (fiber)

Although many people think that bamboo is a type of wood, it is not. In fact, it is a type of grass, but one that grows very tall and strong and also grows at lightning speed. This also makes it sustainable because it can be harvested in quick succession. In addition, it is naturally pest-resistant and requires comparatively little water. The versatile material can be used in almost anything, which is why we have a wide range of bamboo bottles, cups and other products.

Cork

Cork is very sustainable because although it comes from the tree, it does not have to be cut down for it. Only the bark of the cork oak is harvested, after which new bark grows back. This makes cork an efficient, renewable resource with no waste. arises. Indeed, cork is both recyclable and biodegradable.

PLA

PLA is biodegradable in industrial composting, biocompatible and are produced from renewable plant resources such as corn starch. PLA is used, for example, for packaging for peppers, sliced lettuce and strawberries. For that it is perfect, because it is a breathable material. Therefore, it is immediately less suitable for, for example, bottles and has Flask virtually no PLA bottles in the range.

RPET

Recycled plastic or RPET saves on the use of fossil fuels in production. It also emits less CO2 and consumes less water in the production of RPET than plastic. How about all those millions of PET bottles that instead of floating around in the plastic soup are now getting a second life?

Coffee grounds

ast but not least a material you would say there is nothing to make from, but it turns out that is not so bad. Coffee grounds or coffee granules are a byproduct of every cup of coffee brewed. The world's population drinks about 400 billion cups of coffee each year, so that makes for a lot of coffee grounds. Instead of throwing this away, it can be recycled into utensils such as notebooks. That again saves on waste!
